Adoption Day

how it works

Yes, in some cases. Every adoption is evaluated individually, and the right home is always more important than location. We do require the same application process and approval standards regardless of where you live.

Do you adopt outside of San Diego?

Our goal is to create lifelong matches, but we understand that unexpected situations can happen. If an adoption isn't the right fit, please contact us immediately. Our dogs should never be surrendered to a shelter or rehomed on your own. We'll work with you to determine the best next step for both you and the dog.

What if the adoption isn't a good fit?

Yes—renting does not automatically disqualify you.

Every application is reviewed individually. We consider the dog's needs, your housing situation, landlord approval, pet restrictions, and whether your home is the right fit. Some dogs thrive in apartment living, while others require a larger yard and more space to run.

Our priority is matching each dog with the environment where they'll be most successful.

Can I adopt if I rent?

We ask that interested adopters complete an application first. This helps us determine whether a dog is a good fit for your home before scheduling a meet-and-greet. Our goal is to make thoughtful matches while minimizing unnecessary stress for the dogs.

Can I meet a dog before submitting an application?

Every adoption is different. We take the time to carefully review applications, speak with applicants, complete reference and home checks when needed, and ensure each dog is matched with the right family.

We know waiting can be difficult, but finding the right home is always more important than finding the fastest home.

How long does the adoption process take?

Before bringing your new family member home, we recommend having food and water bowls, a comfortable bed, appropriate toys, treats, and a crate if one is recommended for your dog's needs.

To help make the transition easier, every adopted dog goes home with:
-Martingale collar
-Leash
-Favorite toys
-Blanket
-Approximately one week's worth of food

These familiar items help your new dog feel more comfortable as they adjust to their new home.

What supplies should I have before bringing my dog home?

Every question helps us understand your home, lifestyle, and experience so we can make the best possible match.

Our goal isn't simply to place dogs—it's to place them in homes where they'll thrive for the rest of their lives. Taking the time to complete a thorough application helps us make thoughtful, lasting matches.

Why is the application so detailed?

Our adoption fees vary depending on the dog's age, breed, medical care, and individual needs. Every adoption fee helps offset veterinary care, vaccinations, spay/neuter, microchipping, food, training, and rehabilitation so we can continue rescuing more dogs.

Each adopted dog also goes home with a collar and leash to help make the transition into their new home a little easier.
